SHAKSPEARE'S LIFE
Altough William Shakespeare is England's greatestpoet and dramatist, it has been difficult for scholars to find out a great deal about is life.
it is known that Shakespeare was born in Stratford-Upon-Avon in april 1564.
The exact date of his birth is not known. There is a popular tradition that he was born on the23rd of April, wich is St George's day.St George's is the patron saint of England.
Quite a lot is known about the dramatist's familybackground. His father was a glove merchant in Stratford-Upon-Avon, and played an active part in local politics. He served as mayor of the town.
Scholars have been particularly interested to discover what kind of schooling the young Sha kespeare receiveid. It is thought that he attended the grammar school in the town, where boys were instructed in latin.
Surviving documents show that when he was eighteen years old Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, who was eight years older than himself. They eventually had three children- Susan, Hammet and Judith. Hammet and Judith were twins.
It is not known what kind of work shakespeare did immediately after his marriage. Some scholars think he may have worked as a family tutor in an aristocratic house, but there is no firm evidence of this.
It is known, however, that at some point he went to london. Here he became involved in the world of the theatre. At first he was an actor in a thetrical company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men. He later began to write plays, as wellas the most famous series of sonnets in the English language. Shakespeare'sl plays were published after his death.
The Lord Chamberlain's Men was an ambitions theatrical company.It built the famous Globe Theatre in London in 1599. in 1603 the company changed its name to the King's Men. from 1609 onwards the principal theatre of the King's Men was the Blackfriars.
Shakespeare returned to Stratford-Upon-Avon in 1610, a rich and succesfull ma.
He died in the town on the 23rd of April 1616.
Present day visitors to the town can visit the house where shakespeare was born, as well as seeing anne Hathaway's cottage and other buildings associated whit the life of the poet and dramatist.
They can also see performances of shakespeare's plays at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in the town.
